How to Wash a Ceramic-Coated Car Without Ruining the Coating

You spent money getting your car ceramic coated. The last thing you want is to undo all that protection at the corner gas-station car wash. Good news: keeping a coated car clean is easy once you know the rules, but Most people break every one of them. Here’s how to wash your coated car the right way.

The Mistakes That Kill a Coating

Let’s start with what NOT to do:

Automatic brush car washes. Those spinning brushes are loaded with grit from a thousand other cars. They’ll scratch right through your coating.
Dish soap. It’s harsh and strips the hydrophobic layer. Never use it on a coated car.
Washing in direct sun. Water and soap dry too fast and bake spots into the finish.
One dirty sponge and a single bucket. You’re just grinding dirt back into the paint.

The Right Way to Wash

Use the two-bucket method: one bucket with soapy water, one with clean water to rinse your mitt between passes. Grab a pH-neutral car soap made for coatings and a soft microfiber wash mitt. Then:

Rinse the car first to knock loose dirt off before you touch it.
Wash top to bottom, in straight lines, not circles.
Rinse your mitt in the clean bucket often.
Rinse the whole car again, then dry with a clean microfiber towel so you don’t get water spots.

That’s it. No dish soap, no cheap add-ons that clog the coating.

If you park near the water or drive PCH a lot, salt is your enemy. It sits on the paint and eats away at everything underneath. A quick rinse once a week, even without a full wash, knocks the salt off before it can do damage. After a beach day or a foggy marine-layer morning, a rinse goes a long way.

How Often Should You Wash?

Every two weeks is a good rhythm for most South Bay drivers, more often if you’re parked outside near the coast. The whole point of a coating is that dirt doesn’t stick the way it used to, so your washes are faster and easier than they were before.
